Depression in artistes attributed to competition and high expectations – Dr Emmanuel Azusong

Dr. Emmanuel Azusong, a psychiatrist at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, has discussed the mental health issues that celebrities deal with.

He asserts that depression in celebrities can cause a drop in their creative output as well as strain their relationships with other professionals.

Dr. Azusong attributed their depression to factors such as the pressure to succeed and the fierce competition among musicians in the music industry, during an appearance on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning Show.

“A famous person experiencing depression might not create their best work. A depressed celebrity would still struggle in his relationships with his manager and other employees.

“You realize that celebrities have a lot of competition? They have a lot of expectations,” he remarked.

He emphasized that these expectations, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and depression if they are not met, are usually based on comparisons with others rather than the celebrities’ own abilities.

Sometimes a person’s expectations are dependent on other people rather than their own abilities. Therefore, if they do not live up to their expectations, they may experience depression,” he said.
